Our Location and A Bit of History About Cheticamp

Chéticamp is a community located on the west coast of Cape Breton Island in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

At a distance of about 140km north of the Strait of Canso, Cheticamp lies in the shadow of the Cape Breton Highlands, part of the Appalachian Mountain Range, and hugs the coast of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Cheticamp's population is approximately 4,000 and is made up mostly of people of Acadian descent. The region, located on the Cabot Trail, has a natural beauty that will leave you in awe. You will find friendly people, wonderful food, toe-tapping traditional music as well as crafts unique to this corner of the world.

Although the First Nation's poeple were, without a doubt, the first people to visit this corner of l'Acadie while fishing and hunting, nothing indicates that they remained in the region for any length of time.

In the 1750's, during the summer months, the Jerseys ran a fishing station at "La Pointe de l'Île". In 1782, two families settled permanently, and history tells us that 1785 marks the founding of Chéticamp.

"La Grant à Pierre Bois", a charter by which the Crown granted 7000 acres of land, was signed in 1790 by the original 14 brave settlers of Cheiticamp.
